Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Plastics and concrete fencing materials are projected to post some of the fastest growth over the forecast period. Gains for plastic fencing will come primarily at the expense of wood. Plastic materials can offer similar aesthetics to those of wood, with advantages in reduced maintenance costs. Vinyl will account for the vast majority of the plastic fencing total in 2007, with wood-plastic composite lumber and high-density polyethylene representing much smaller fractions In residential markets, demand for vinyl fencing will be aided by homeowners desires to reduce the burden of caring for their property.
When she disappeared a shimmer lifted from the length of the fence, a series of waves becoming sky. I havent stood quite by myself since, listing one way or another, hoping to hear the faint quiver that sometimes does a little dance over the beating of my heart.

Question: As a business owner, when is it a good idea to invest in real estate? Answer: Investing in real estate can be tempting to many business owners who are hoping to cash in on increasing real estate values and to achieve the peace of mind that comes with being your own landlord. Banks make borrowing money for real estate easier than many other loan types, further enhancing the attractiveness of real estate investments. But when should you invest in real estate?

The Irvine real estate firm said it would partner with homebuilders and developers to provide capital to existing or planned projects. Co-managing partner L.M. Cummings said it is the vision of Scala to work with the developers and homeowners to provide the capital infusion they need to move forward during a challenging market cycle.

Is there anything a caller hates more than an automated answering system? One of the biggest abuses in the retail environment is the automated attendant, said William Belcher, a retail specialist and behavioral psychologist with Damar Management. The consumer is reaching out to buy, or to check on a product or service, and the retailer has put up an artificial barrier. Lets say you use an automated answering system, and you get 100 telephone calls a week. Of those 100 calls, according to the study, 26 will hang up before you get a chance to talk to them. Now, lets say that five of the 26 callers would have come into your store and purchased $100 worth of products. Thats $500 a week youre potentially losing, or $26,000 a year.

SAN LORENZO — From Bockman Road, the giant sign for Game Time Hoops, a new basketball gym, can be seen through large windows. Inside, owner Mike Gouvea is working out the final details for the youth league facility, such as wall padding and sporty window decals. A new wooden floor to cover the current concrete one is the one thing the gym really needs. No one has stepped up with a donation, but Gouvea, who also runs the Game Time video store next door, said he plans to go to the Golden State Warriors offices in person to ask for help Monday.

In a flash he soars toward the hoop. Slam dunk! He scores.Hakeem gets the rebound and heads for his teams hoop. Still meters away from the basket, he jumps over the heads of defensive players and sinks the ball.As Hakeem comes back down to earth, you have to wonder–how do these star players rack up all those points?I decide to find out for myself. Rodent control is taking some interesting and not so encouraging turns. There is an initiative that will be introduced in California on the November 1998 ballot (assuming it gets the 500,000 signatures needed, which is a slam dunk in California). It is called an Initiative to Ban Cruel Traps. This initiative, in a nutshell, will make it illegal to use a body gripping trap. one that grips the mammals body or body part, including, but not limited to, steel-jawed leghold traps, padded-jaw leghold traps, Conibear traps, and snares. This initiative also states that, it is illegal for any person, including employees of the federal, state, county or municipal government, to use or authorize the use of any steel-jawed leghold trap, padded or otherwise, to capture any game mammal, fur-bearing mammal, non-game mammal, protected mammal, or any dog or cat. Now, stop and reread that paragraph and think about it for a minute. This initiative decides for us that we cant control agricultural fur-bearing pests any longer. For that matter, it specifically states that you cant trap anything that has fur on it for any reason, and that the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, State Department of Fish Game and your local county ag commissioner or county trapper cant do it either. It does make provision for the protection of human health and safety (pretty considerate - you know how vicious those gopher and mole attacks on children have been lately), and it will allow you to use mouse traps in your basement. Oh, and by the way, it introduces two chemicals that can no longer by used - Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide. What are these used for? Well, its not rodent control. The state has been experimenting with these two chemicals for coyote control. They make a collar to put around a lambs neck. If the animal is unfortunate enough to be a victim of a coyote attack and the coyote punctures the collar its lights out for the sheep killer. The point here is precedent - get these two and then work your way on to household chemicals for insect and rodent control and sweep everything up in between.Since this is not a political editorial, all I can say is watch out for this one. Agriculture will lose big time, so tell a friend and lets make sure that we dont get tied down by bad law written by extremists. If you want a copy of this initiative yourself, again, hit me on the e-mail, and Ill send you a copy. You can read it yourself and decide on your own. I think it is very important that we dont make our decision based on whats on TV. Hollywood is anti-trapping and they have a lot of money to spend to support their position. If you want a recent case history lesson you may look at the fine State of Colorado, which had a similar initiative pass last year by a 51% margin. After the smoke cleared, it was disclosed that Hollywood spent just a little over a quarter million dollars to promote the initiative. All the local state and county representatives, combined with the agriculture and fur trapping industries, could muster was $48,000, and they lost.
Pest controllers locate, identify, repel, and destroy pests. They use their knowledge of pests habits, along with an arsenal of pest management techniques-applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and even modifying building structures-to alleviate pest problems. The best known method of pest control is pesticide application. Pest controllers apply two different types of pesticides: common use and restricted use. Common use pesticides are the most widely used and are readily available; in diluted concentrations, they are available to the public. Restricted use pesticides are available only to professionals for the most severe infestations. Their application is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of their potential harm to pest controllers, customers, and the environment.

concrete business opportunities
October 6th, 2008
Our lead story in this issue deals with new business formation, a trend that has been affected by the dynamics of a changing economy in the Quadstate region. With a strong economy, fewer people are looking at starting a business because they feel secure in their jobs. And with a soaring real estate market, in which home values have increased by upwards of 100% in the last five years, local entrepreneurs no longer have to max out their credit cards to start a business; they can tap into the equity in their homes. While this may not be the best strategy-betting the proverbial farm on a new business-it certainly provides an alternative source of start-up capital, one that wasnt available several years ago. The changing demographics of the region, caused by an influx of welleducated and skilled commuters from the east in search of a lower cost of living and a better quality of life, has created new business opportunities. Taking advantage of this trend means an entrepreneur must find a market niche to cater to people who are used to spending discretionary income on such things like personal services, wines, day spas and fine dining.
How Community Banks Are Using Small Business Lending to Build New Business and Customer Relationships In the past few years, community bankers have learned to adapt to a lot of changes and to deal with a lot of upheaval. Financial modernization has been the main culprit, but other factors have contributed as well: increased lending flexibility, opening-up of competition, new products and changing markets. Among those opportunities is the world of commercial lending. Not so long ago, many savings institutions were content to provide deposit and home lending functions. It was quite lucrative, and their positions as communitybased institutions inspired confidence in their clientele.

laser hair removal minnesota
October 6th, 2008
Lasers and light-based hair removal technology are at the forefront of providing long-lasting relief for patients with excessive hair, and now new research shows promise in treating people with skin and hair of all hues. Lasers work to successfully reduce hair growth and thickness by releasing pulses of light that penetrate the skin and are drawn to the pigmentation of hair follicles. These follicles selectively absorb the laser energy and are subsequently destroyed by it. At the same time, the surrounding skin tissue is left unaffected, and patients experience minimal side effects. However, one early limitation of hair removal lasers was that no single system could effectively remove hair of every skin type. Dark-skinned patients sometimes experienced skin discoloration, and patients with white, gray, or light hair could not benefit from this treatment because their hair follicles were unable to absorb the lasers energy. Today thats no longer the case, according to research published in the February 2004 edition of Dermatologic Surgery. Thirty-six dark haired adults with varying skin tones received three consecutive treatments with a long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser over 4 to 6-week intervals. One month after the final treatment, the patients experienced successful hair reduction ranging from 58% to 62% on the face, and 66% to 69% on other parts of the body. Success was still noticeable 6 months after the final treatment, with a mean hair reduction of 41% to 46% on the face and 48% to 53% on the body.
Self conscious about unwanted hair growth? Youre not alone. In fact, last year laser hair removal was one of the five most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. with nearly one million people treated. More and more men are having unwanted hair removed from their backs, shoulders, chests and necks. Women frequently have hair removed from their faces, legs, arms and trunks. Hair can safely be removed from any part of the body. But dont expect the results to be permanent. You can make a very visible difference and significantly reduce hair growth through a series of laser treatments. The Gentlelase by Candela is one of the most advanced hair removal lasers available today. This laser emits a beam of light that penetrates three to five millimeters through the skin to the bulb of the hair shaft where it is absorbed by the melanin that gives hair its color. The heat from this laser damages the bulb of the hair shaft and its blood supply without affecting the surrounding skin. The hair follicle remains intact but becomes miniaturized. This thermal damage impairs hair re-growth over time.

Sondheim: Passion Original Broadway Cast (EMI Angel CDQ 7243-5-55251-2) Passion is effectively a “musical” without songs. Passion feels through-composed, though much of it is not sung or underscored. Passion is stream of consciousness, dream-like in its narrative flow. Passion is at once the most febrile and effulgently lyrical of Stephen Sondheim. All of which might just explain why it appears to have divided even the fully paid-up members of his appreciation society. Perhaps the most notable aspect of this show is the degree to which it has refined the relationship between that which is spoken and that which is sung. Passion is songful. Like the emotions it chronicles, this “rhapsody” on the power of unconditional
The MusicDar Williams discussed during her set the reasons why womyn should switch to organic, unbleached cotton tampons and other products such as sea sponges during our periods. The traces of dioxins found in grocery store tampons are hazardous carcinogens; at the same time, the male-owned “feminine hygiene product” industry is making an astounding profit off our bodies. Williams considered that the organic products are more expensive than mainstream ones, so she offered a few hilarious possibilities for overcoming the increased expense. One suggestion was to give female loved ones packages of woman-safe tampons for birthday and seasonal gifts. For her personal contribution, she stopped at every health food store and co-op on her way to the festival and cleared their shelves of boxes of unbleached tampons. At this point her traveling companions walked down the catwalk with an enormous basket full of tampons and began wildly flinging them into the audience. Gleeful womyn rushed the stage to scoop up flying tampons!Tribe 8 returned for the night stage this year. The audience was noticeably smaller than other nights because many women didnt attend the performance. I hadnt been to one of their shows before so I looked forward to seeing what all the fuss was about from previous years. Yes, Lynn Breedlove hacked off a dildo on stage in Hothead Paisan fashion. I had a visceral jolt of fascination and revulsion watching her saw at the big dildo with her huge, bright silver knife — an effect the whole show seems intended to engender. I enjoyed the show — it was energetic, joyful and participative even while it fiercely expressed their anger about being women in a patriarchal world. Many women can relate to their first song, “The Mens Room is Down the Hall.” In this song Breedlove challenges those who judge her for not conforming to patriarchal norms of how a woman should dress and act.
It can only be a matter of time before she ditches Blue Note classicism for the electro-clash rock of Klaxons (new at No 2), the garage-grime frontline rhyme of Jamie T (in at No 4), or the mockney rap of Just Jack (at No 6, innit).

How do advertisers capture kids attention between mouseclicks? Advertisers, in their never-ending quest to capitalize on the quickly changing tastes of 2-to-12-year-olds, are taking a fresh look at kids online communities as a way of reaching their target audience and influencing young decision makers brand impressions. The drive to reach kids on the Web has intensified. Jupiter Communications, the New York City-based online research organization, projects that the number of kids online ages 2to 12 will swell from more than 5 million in 1998 to nearly 21 million by 2002. While banner ads have been a mainstay on kids Internet sites, marketers are frantically searching for new vehicles, such as sponsorships of chat areas, contests, interactive games, promotions and anonymous data polling to make their mark on kids. “When it comes to kids, there is not just one right way to advertise,” says Idit Herel, CEO and founder of MaMaMedia, a kids online community “The click-through rates are higher for kids than adults. Theyre risk takers and explorers, and you have to understand what they find intriguing and interesting.”
Banner, like Brown and the Rock and Ice men, was a Lancastrian, but began his outstanding climbing career while studying chemistry at Bristol University in the early 1950s. Here he was one of the pioneers of the strenuous, fin-gery climbing on the forbiddingly steep limestone of Avon Gorge. Bold, extreme climbs such as Great Central Route and the aptly named Desperation, climbed in 1953, epitomised Banners vision in opening up lines on a formidable cliff few had dared to consider seriously as a climbing ground. Out of term time, he kept his standard topped up on the highly technical sandstone of his local crag at Helsby while based at his parental home in Lancashire. Banner soon became almost as famous for his feats of derring-do on his Vincent motorbike as on his climbs, reaching over 100mph on a straight bit of road going past Helsby Grammar School on the way to his local pub in Frodsham. “In the pub he would outline his next plan, spoken in a slow nasal drawl,” recalled Jones, “fingers delicately gripping the top of his pint pot while he slowly ran them round the smooth rim.” Following a two-year break for National Service, Banner plunged back into the fray, determined to smash the psychological barrier created by the Rock and Ice on the crags of Britain by becoming the first to repeat many of their fabled routes. His obsessive pursuit of this task distracted him from pioneering many new routes, something he later regretted. But those he did create tended to be extremely noteworthy.

Swimming pools If any designer or specifier, owner or operator of a swimming pool wishes to know almost anything on the subject which is not covered in the book, the extensive reading lists provide authoritative guidance on where this may be found. Having worked with the author for some years in the Advisory Division of the Cement and Concrete Association, I am not surprised to find the meticulous care taken in providing important details on many aspects of pool planning, design and construction. Swimming pools have to function in an environment aggressive to many of the materials used in their construction and the text provides guidance on avoiding potential problems. The majority of pools have a basic reinforced concrete structure built below ground which, externally, is subject to earth and water pressure and is liable to attack from aggressive ground conditions. Detailed guidance is not provided on reinforced concrete design but pointers to references on design are listed and factors affecting the durability of reinforced concrete are presented in some detail.

Swimming PoolIn the design and manufacturing of pre-fabricated aboveground pools, the cost of fabrication continues to be a major concern. Pools have to be manufactured in a variety of styles and sizes to accommodate the available space requirements of the customer and the variety of components necessary for manufacturing is quite large. Designs that can incorporate this flexibility and reduce the necessary inventory required to accommodate a variety of sizes and structures have begun to arrive in the above ground swimming pool manufacturing marketplace creating easier systems to erect without sacrificing stability.

Although they have new customers every month of the year, historically businesses tend to still think of new payroll and the new financial year going together. It is a time when business owners reflect on their previous year and are often looking to improve systems, make things easier and basically make the most of their time. iPayroll is the Internet-based payroll service designed to help small to medium businesses. Its customers range from companies with as little as one or two staff right up to several hundred and are located from one end of the country to the other. They also have many overseas companies with New Zealand staff, utilising the flexibility of the Internet. iPayrolls service frees up a business owners time allowing them to focus on their business, and the service is equally important for larger organisations looking for more efficient systems. Its clients were either using a “manual” system, 3 package, or an alternative outsource supplier.
This new online tool offers additional services including automatic tax calculations, electronic tax and form filing, direct deposit, and encoded payroll checks. The software is designed to integrate quickly with most general ledger software packages.

permanent hair removal

Q Im tired of shaving every single day. Has laser hair removal improved at all over the past couple of years, and is it right for me? * Lasers work best on dark hair and light skin. The low-energy light targets pigment in the hair follicle, damaging it enough to slow down future growth. The light is attracted to color like a magnet, Gilmore explains. Since blonde hair doesnt have much pigment, the laser wont gravitate toward it as well as it would dark-colored hair. And if your skin is naturally dark or tanned (even from self-tanners), the laser wont detect dark hair against it. * You wont get instant results. Hair cycles through one growth phase and two dormant phases, usually within two to four months total. So as more hair grows in, youll need additional treatments, about four weeks apart.
Hair RemoverHair removers, or depilatories, are products designed to chemically or physically remove undesirable hair from areas on the body. Hair removers are made by mixing together the appropriate raw materials in large stainless steel tanks and then filling them into individual packages. In use for thousands of years, they continue to be an important part of many peoples everyday hygiene. Currently, new hair removers are being investigated which are less irritating, more effective, and longer lasting.Epilatories were the first type of hair removers. The most common of these products is an epilating wax. This product is heated and spread on the skin in the desired area. It is then allowed to cool and harden. The mass of wax is then rapidly removed, pulling with it about 80% of the hairs. It is a slightly painful procedure and a mild anti-+ septic is typically applied to protect against skin irritation. Epilatories have not been widely used by individual consumers, how-ever they are popular in beauty salons.

Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are disorders that frequently burden combat veterans1 and often occur comorbidly.2,3 PTSD is experienced by 7 to 12% of the general population4,5 and typically develops following exposure to a situation or event that is, or is perceived to be, threatening to the safety or physical integrity of oneself or others. The types of trauma that people experience are wide-ranging; examples include physical assault, sexual assault, combat, tragic death, terrorism, motor vehicle accidents, and natural disasters.6 Meanwhile, depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders in our society and is expected to account for 15% of the disease burden in the world by 2020.7 Depression is typically characterized by depressed mood or loss of interest in all activities for a period of at least 2 weeks. Furthermore, individuals experiencing depression also report weight loss or gain, inability to concentrate, feelings of worthlessness and guilt, and suicidal ideation or attempts.8 Several studies have documented the association between PTSD symptoms and poor health among military veterans as well as others.2,9-11 PTSD symptoms are related to increases in self-reports of physical symptoms and physical health problems,12-14 current pain, pain-related disability,15 and poor functional outcomes.16 Furthermore, reports of PTSD symptoms are positively correlated with higher numbers of physician-diagnosed health conditions.17 Most recently, investigators have shown that PTSD symptoms have both direct and indirect influences, via depression and smoking, on the health status of male peacekeepers18 and military veterans.19 PTSD has also been associated with increased utilization of medical services.17,20,21
Although girls ages 12-17 made up less than one-third of adolescent treatment admissions in 2005, they began treatment at a younger age than boys and were more likely to have a co-occurring psychiatric disorder. Adolescents admitted with a psychiatric problem in addition to a substance abuse problem were counted as having a co-occurring disorder. Girls were more likely to have such co-occurring disorders, which were reported in 23 percent of the female admissions, compared with 18 percent of the male admissions–Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
Credit Card Debt
September 29th, 2008
If you want to be the master of your credit card debt load, follow these key rules: 1. Take inventory. How many credit cards do you have? Whats the balance and minimum monthly payment on each? Whats the total balance? If its more than you thought or can afford, its time to pare down. 3. Get one low-fee or lower-interest card and use it wisely. Make your local bank or credit union your first stop when starting your search. Check to see if you can transfer existing debt from your various credit cards to your new lower-interest credit card.
SAVING money on your credit-card bill can be as simple as switching to a new card company. It is not just a question of playing the field for the lowest interest rate or the lowest annual fee. Some card issuers will trim your overall level of debt if you transfer your credit card business to them, even if you are still in the interest-free period and not yet paying any interest on that debt. Midland Bank also offers a 5 per cent rebate on a balance transferred from a rival credit-card company. But this rebate is only available to people who are already paying interest on at least some of the transferred debt. If you are simply transferring a balance that has not yet attracted interest, there is no rebate. The maximum saving in moving to a Midland Access or Visa card is pounds 100. The Bank of Scotland runs a similar scheme for new customers who consolidate their credit and storecard debt on to one of its cards. A sliding scale offers a maximum saving of pounds 60, for debt transfers of pounds l,250 or more.

The English Golf Union has been awarded pounds 650,000 from the National Lottery towards the construction and development of the teaching academy at its National Golf Centre at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire.
Golfs governing bodies are to introduce a one-stroke penalty rule in an attempt to combat slow play. The words “slow play” are to appear in the rulebook for the first time from 1 January. Among the other changes coming into effect next year are ones that permit committees to make local rules to prohibit play from an environmentally sensitive area. A further amendment will deny a player relief when his stance, not the ball, is affected by casual water, ground under repair or certain damage to the course.

Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service
The national survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality The survey also showed that Americans rely on the recommendations of friends and family more than standardized quality indicators when selecting a health care provider, and people have little confidence that employers will give reliable information about the quality of health care providers. And despite the undeniable draw of the Internet, people still trust doctors and pharmacists more than advertisements and the Web for information on prescription medications, the survey shows.

Cancer is a group of many related diseases in which abnormal cells grow out of control and spread.
C ANCER The scope of the problem in the United States is large. Some 1.2 million people were diagnosed with potentially fatal cancer in the year 2000. Of these, 59 percent were expected to live for at least five years (in some, the cancer may be continuously present for more than five years) with or without evidence of cancer. People of all ages, from birth to advanced age, can manifest cancer, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. In children cancer is unusual, but it has consistently been the leading cause of death from disease. As mortality rates from cardiovascular disease decline, the proportion of cancer deaths increases. It is anticipated that the mortality rate from cancer will surpass that from heart disease by the year 2050. Direct and indirect financial costs of cancer in the United States for the year 2000 were $178 billion.Developing countries represented 80 percent of the worlds approximately 6 billion people in the year 2000. In these countries, cancer has grown from a minor public health issue in the early 1990s to a rapidly expanding problem by the beginning of the twenty-first century. The emergence of a middle class, with attendant changes in lifestyle, increased longevity and exposure to potential carcinogens, and expectations of improved medical delivery systems have fueled the growing impact of cancer in the third world. The financial resources and socio-medical infrastructure needed to diagnose and treat, much less screen and prevent these cancers, are lacking in the developing world.
Searching for a cure Cancer cure is elusive, but scientists are getting closer, thanks to research, experts say

If anyone should be an inspiration to the legions of non-Latin Europeans dutifully signing on for GCSE salsa classes, Larry Harlow should. Jewish, and the son of a band leader and an opera singer, Harlow veered abruptly towards Latin street music, rather than jazz or the classics at the Music Art High School in New York in the 1950s. “We were right beside Spanish Harlem - I used to listen to the music in the Latino grocers shops.” In the 1960s and 1970s his novel rearrangements of trombone, trumpet, violin and flute sections moved him to the centre of New Yorks Latin scene, working with artists like Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barreto and Willie Colon, the generation whose tough new hybrid sound first came to be called salsa. Harlow was the first artist to be signed by the seminal Fania label, co-wrote the Latin rock opera Hommy (Mark 2 version on the way), played for the famous Mohammed Ali-George Foreman fight in Zaire (a fiasco: everyone came for the fight, not the concert). The last decade has been spent with his own band touring the world. Last year conga ace Ray Barreto had the idea, inspired by the “fantasy band”, an ad hoc group of jamming jazz stars, of reconvening Harlow, himself, singer Adalberto Santiago and cuatro player Yomo Toro as the Latin Legends Band. Thus Harlow makes his first ever London appearance on Saturday (Barreto is a regular performer and Santiago was here last year). No longer a breath- bating prospect, perhaps, but a most intriguing one.

Estate and Tax Planning Winnipeg
September 26th, 2008
A recent question on CalCPAs Estate Planning Forum dealt with the timing of the termination of an estate. The estate had a significant capital loss, which would be available to the heirs when the estate filed its final income tax return. The CPA requested clarification of the proper timing for closing of the estate. In short, what event establishes the date on which the estate is ended, for income tax purposes? There is some judgment to be exercised in determining when an estate or trust is terminated. In the case of a probate estate, there will be a final order for distribution, and the assets of the estate would be distributed some time after the order by the Probate Court.
Estate Planning This revised 11th edition, 340-page reference is part of the Tax Management Estates, Gifts and Trusts Series, a continuing program providing guidance in handling estate, gift and trust planning issues. Topics include: the development of the estate plan; lifetime transfers; transfers at death; generation-skipping transfers; special planning considerations (e.g., community property, life insurance, charitable transfers, closely held corporations); and post-mortem planning. The book reflects tax law changes in the 1990 Revenue Reconciliation Act, emphasizing the impact of the new chapter 14 estate freeze rules on transfers of property among family members and traditional planning techniques. Increased coverage of deferred compensation, employee benefits and retirement plans reflects their growing importance in the field of estate planning. A special section details drafting forms to fit client needs. Working papers contain revised client interview forms, wills and trusts, including several for specialized situations, such as marital deduction trusts, by-pass trusts and Crummey powers. The author, currently Vinson Elkins Professor of Law at the University of Houston Law Center, has published several books in the fields of estate planning, corporate taxation and international business. This reference could be a practical working tool for accountants, attorneys and others involved in the estate planning process.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.
Summers almost here, and the future looks bright. So freshen up your beauty regime for the most colourful season in the fashion calendar. In this weeks 12-page special section, Carola Long meets Bobbi Brown, make-up guru to Hollywoods best-dressed stars, and hears her essential summer tips; Beth Dadswell takes a walk on the wild side, and discovers a brave new world of extreme make-up; while Gemma Hayward selects the new seasons must-have products for her and for him THE SCENE backstage at the Sass Bide show at New York Fashion Week is one of glamorous chaos. There are models scrambling into clothes, production staff testing sound and lighting to dramatic, somewhat cacophonous, effect and even an MTV crew filming an episode of a teen drama. Amid this frenzied activity, a petite woman in jeans with hair the colour of black coffee, who looks like a quietly glamorous “mom”, is providing the calm centre of the fashion storm. Bobbi Brown, renowned make-up artist to everyone from Sienna Miller to Susan Sarandon and founder of a successful, eponymous cosmetics brand, radiates a most un-fashiony serenity as she demonstrates the maquillage she has devised for the show on a model. She dabs at her face almost like a Renaissance painter, palette in hand, before her “elite team” of make-up artists from around the world set to work on recreating the effect.

As art jewelry comes into its own in America, galleries are clasping onto the trend and finding success with the art/jewelry mix. Throughout the world, body ornamentation is an ancient and time-honored art form. Yet in the United States, jewelry as art has only recently come into its own. The distinction between mass-produced jewelry and art jewelry is not just in the quantity but the design, said jewelry artist Gretchen Kubacky of Los Angeles. Ive seen some stunningly high-quality designs in a department store that wouldnt be considered fine art, and Ive seen $5,000 diamond earrings that have no design quality to them. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

While every franchise is a business opportunity, not every business opportunity is a franchise. To be a franchise, a business opportunity must meet three criteria set by state and federal law: The franchisee must: 1) pay a fee to the franchisor for the right to offer certain products or services; 2) use the franchisors name, trademark and service mark; and 3) operate and market the business according to processes and standards set by the franchisor. A business that does not meet all three of these requirements is considered a nonfranchise business opportunity.Franchises generally offer a lot of assistance; they also insist you follow specific rules and strict operating methods. Business opportunities offer more freedom; they let you run the business any way you desire. However, that also means less support. While most business opportunity sellers will answer your questions over the phone - and some even provide as much assistance as a franchisor - in most cases, after the seller gives you basic guidelines and enough product to get started, youre on your own.Because business opportunities generally cost much less than franchises, they can be a great way to get into business on a budget. And you wont have to worry about ongoing royalties or other continuing fees that franchisees are usually subject to.

Investors, companies and environmentalists hedge against global warming with tree options. JAY PRUETT LAST YEAR SPENT us$5.4 MILLION OF HIS COMPANYS money to plant a forest in Brazil. Hes not planning to cut timber or build a resort. But he means to put those trees to work. SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — WagerWeb.com, one of the Internets largest sports betting sites, posted odds today for the trial outcomes of the Duke Lacrosse team players Collin Finnerty and Reade Sleigmann. Earlier this month, Wagerweb.com was the first to post odds on the number of DNA matches that investigators would make in the case. Though no matches were made, the prosecution still indicted two players and now bettors will have the chance to predict outcomes for their trials. Our customers have called and e-mailed us, requesting these odds be available to them during the trials. They are very interested in the outcome for these cases, says Dave Johnson, CEO of WagerWeb.com. He continues, Our customers like to bet on what they see and hear on television, and this case has no shortage of media attention and hype. Finnerty and Sleigmann are accused of first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and first-degree kidnapping. The odds ask bettors if either of the men will be convicted of one, two or all three counts as well as the option to pick not-guilty on all three counts or a mistrial. Payouts for each player are as follows: Note: All bets have action when trial commences. If for any reason this does not go to trial all bets are deemed no action.

NO COLLEGE PRESIDENT IN HIS right mind would want apparel bearing his schools logo made in a sweatshop. But licensing agreements, long-held partnerships, and factors specific to the retail business make putting an end to such circumstances complicated. Backed by the Worker Rights Consortium, the DSP has drawn support from a number of IHEs, including the University of California and Columbia University. Yet others have expressed concerns about the programs complexities, and its potential for skyrocketing apparel prices and for opening the door to antitrust lawsuits. Martin Jischke, president of Purdue University, opted not to support the DSP despite student protests at his Indiana institution last spring. I am especially concerned about the requirement for unionization, Jischke wrote in a statement.
Providing that the economy stays strong, with inflation and unemployment low, the prospects for Generation Y to remain aggressive apparel shoppers remain excellent. Of an estimated $140 billion spent by kids in the 12 to 19 age group last year, more than one-third, about $46.7 billion, was spent on apparel, exclusive of another $14 billion spent on health and beauty care, according to research by Teen Research Unlimited and Channel One. The pattern of teen sales is ubiquitous within all tiers of retailing. Juniors and young mens departments are among the strongest at department stores and specialty chains. Retailers, such as Abercrombie Fitch, The Buckle, Wet Seal, Pacific Sunwear and Urban Outfitters, are registering some of the strongest overall and comp store sales increases of any apparel outlets. Will it be long before its the mass markets turn?

Foot fault LAutre Pied 5-7 Blandford Street, London W1 (020-7486 9696) It was Kevins choice to go to LAutre Pied. Hes an admirer of Pied Terre, that two-Michelin-starred temple to exquisiteness, and was curious to try this, its new, less formal, sister restaurant. Actually, make that little brother. The head chef, Marcus Eaves, is only 26, and until recently worked as sous-chef to Shane Osborn at Pied Terre. Wisely deciding to keep his talents within the organisation, his employers have given him a stake in this new venture, housed in a Marylebone location that was until recently the modern British restaurant Blandford Street.
My unease was heightened by my having lunched shortly before the awards ceremony at both Le Gavroche and Chez Nico to find out just what was being offered by these two top-ranked restaurants. The answer was quintessentially French cuisine in formal, impeccably presented establishments, with prix-fixe menus available at lunchtime at both. Le Gavroche occupies basement premises in Upper Brook Street. It is traditionally furnished and decorated, so as to appear very ancien regime today, but tables are spaced well apart, chairs are comfortable, and service, under the watchful, totally professional but benevolent eye of Silvano Giraldin, is a pleasure to receive. Cooking is now in the hands of young Michel Roux, the London-born son of Gavroche founder Albert Roux and the nephew of the other Michel Roux of the Waterside of Bray. Michel may be young, but he remains a classicist in inspiration and technique, and his 37 lunch menu, for three courses and coffee, including mineral water and half a bottle of a choice of house wines per head, offers both an object lesson in French grande bourgeoise cuisine and very reasonable value. I lunched at Le Gavroche with the slim, beautiful nutritional consultant Jane Clarke, whose recently published book Body Foods for Life is as clearly explained as it is attractively written and produced, and bears out Janes philosophy that healthy eating need not debar one from enjoying of food. She proved an enthusiastic and expert companion in the appreciation of Michel Rouxs cooking. After an interesting amuse-bouche of stuffed breast of chicken in a light curry sauce, Jane chose from the three starters an immaculate veloute of shellfish, with champagne in the veloute lifting the flavour of the fish most successfully. My starter was equally satisfying: a light rocket salad, dressed with a vinaigrette in which the truffle oil was not overassertive but simply a joy to taste, accompanying a deliciously crisp confit of belly of pork. With these we drank a half-bottle of excellent Alsatian Pinot Blanc de Blancs from Leon Beyer. Next Jane chose a shoulder of meltingly tender baby lamb, served with saffron and couscous which aroused her delight - `beautifully balanced was a phrase I heard among murmurs of enjoyment. My leg of hare `braised a lancienne was admirably prepared, richly flavoured, and accompanied by gorgeous pommes mousseline, but I did wonder whether it was slightly too heavy a dish for lunchtime. With these we took both the red wines offered at the kind suggestion of M. Giraldin, who wanted to demonstrate that his Bandol Mas de la Rouviere 95 yielded little to his Saint Emilion Chateau Vieux Sarpe 93. He was right. We finished with some excellent creme legere moka and delicious sorbets, then coffee with very good petits fours. It had been a most satisfying meal, not revolutionary or even especially inventive, but of a consistent quality that is what excellence is all about, and with no extras save the 1212 per cent service charge. Le Gavroches Carlton prize was well deserved, as was the comparatively full room.
What was the Exmouth Bar Grill, as forgettable as its name suggests, seared its last steak, and The Ambassador has taken up residence in its place. With green Formica topped tables, grey lino floor and white globe lights its remarkable only for its bareness. There may not be much detail to the decor, but everything else has been thought of. There are proper aperitifs and, take my word for it, these appetite-sharpeners are becoming terribly comme il faut. I forgive them for not having my current favourite Lillet, try and reject Floc de Gascogne, and do very well with a Manzanilla. Drinks for hangovers include a wheat beer and Fentimans ginger beer shandy. Many of the wines are sold by the glass. The cogent list opens with France and Italy and refreshingly relegates the New World to a small league of its own. That this is not just another knocked-together modern British bistro or gastropub without the beer pumps becomes even more apparent when we meet the owner, Clive Greenhalgh, whose CV cannily mixes stints at The Eagle (EC1s original gastropub) and The Brackenbury in Shepherds Bush. Hes been backed by Mike Belben, half of The Eagles original partnership, whose Anchor Hope in Waterloo confirms he has the magic touch. I was encouraged to taste an aperitif before I chose. We were offered the Charles Schleret Sylvaner from Alsace to try before committing to a bottle. At this rate you could get through a glass or two before you start paying for drinks.

Rough Terrain ForkliftThe rough terrain forklift dates back to about 1946 when a two-pronged lift attachment was placed on a power buggy or tractor chassis. This early machine was used around construction sites and could lift about 1,000 pounds (454 kg) to a height of 30 inches (76 cm). Rapid development of vertical tower forklifts for industrial use was adapted to rough terrain forklifts as well. By the mid-1950s, capacities of 2,500 pounds (1,135 kg) and lift heights of up to 30 feet (9 m) were available.

At the end of 1998 it was estimated that around 171.8 million people had access to the Internet throughout the world. Canada and the US held the largest share of the Internet market with 56 per cent in 1998. However, the combined percentage share is set to decline considerably as Europe and the Asia-Pacific region catches up with 24 per cent and 18 per cent, respectively, by the end of 1999. In the Asia-Pacific region, Japan has the largest share of the market.
E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?
A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

Although several plumbing manufacturers unveiled their new products at Aprils Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, there were still a number of interesting product debuts at the more recent National Hardware Show. The TwistPfit system will roll out to Price Pfisters entire line of widespreads by January, said national accounts manager Ron Bain. He added that TwistPfit will encourage women — who already make 75 percent of faucet purchases — to install faucets themselves. Waxman Consumer Products, which markets the Plumb Craft brand, also set out to make life easier for women. The supplier found that women do 79 percent of all cleaning tasks in the house. The new Soap n Spray is designed to make one of these tasks — dishwashing — easier. Soap n Spray replaces existing sink sprayers and serves as a soap dispenser and dish brush, helping eliminate kitchen sink clutter. Liquid detergent goes right into a see-through compartment in the Soap n Spray and is released with the push of a trigger. Another trigger sprays water. The nylon brush that comes with the Soap n Spray is detachable, dishwasher-safe and can be alternated with a scouring pad attachment, which is sold separately.

property for sale in villamartin spain

Highlights and Key Issues * Evidence is mounting that Spain is set for a rocky ride because of the property crisis. We expect GDP growth of 2.3% this year - in line with the Bank of Spain - and for the housing market woes to weigh further on growth in 2009. Spains newly elected Socialist government has pledged to approve a euro22bn package of tax rebates and employment programmes to stave off the risk of recession. The government is in a good fiscal position and can afford to pass a large stimulus. * A further blow to consumer spending could come from higher inflation. CPI inflation rose to 4.5% in March, pushed by high energy and food prices. However, as demand moderates and the effect of energy prices slips out of the calculation we expect inflation to drop back in H2. However, it is likely to remain above 3%.
Highlights and Key Issues * A third consecutive monthly rise in the number of unemployed in December- almost entirely in construction - bodes ill for GDP growth in the current year, which we forecast at a below consensus 2.5%. There are now 107,000 more unemployed workers than in December 2006. * The housing market crisis is weighing heavily on consumer confidence. Last year the market saw a sharp fall in the rate of house price inflation, which we forecast at 3.5% year-on-year in 2007Q4 compared to 9.1 % a year earlier. The danger is that in 2008 a weaker labour market, relatively high mortgage costs, and falling house prices may lead to a sharp rise in foreclosures.

H UNTING As a human activity, hunting is magnified in its significance by a deceptively simple feature: the evasiveness or resistance exhibited routinely by prey. Because of the behavioral challenges that it presents, hunting has had far-reaching consequences for key aspects of human social, psychological, and cultural life. Since the mid-1960s, for example, anthropologists have argued that hunting may have been a powerful and fundamental force shaping the very nature of cooperation and sharing among early humans. One such claim involves what the behavioral ecologist Bruce Winterhalder calls the risk reduction hypothesis. The failure rate of hunters is notoriously high. Even among experienced, highly skilled subsistence hunters who pursue big game animals, any one hunt is much more likely to result in failure than in success. Studying the Hadza of Tanzania in 1993, the anthropologist Kristen Hawkes reported that when hunting big game, Hadza men failed to make a kill 97 of every 100 days that they hunted. When a large game animal is killed, it often represents a windfall in excess of what any one hunter and his or her immediate family can consume. These circumstances promote reciprocity and sharing among hunters. By sharing the meat provided by a successful kill, a hunter effectively buys insurance against failure in future hunts. When, in the future, he or she fails to kill prey, other successful hunters with whom meat has been shared previously will reciprocate and provide meat to the unsuccessful hunter. The science writer Matt Ridley argues that the cooperation and reciprocity associated with hunting may help constitute the basis of systems of moral and ethical culture. In short, hunting is an activity that promotes cooperation and sharing because it entails the pursuit of a highly valued resource, access to which is unpredictable and risky.
Two of Virginias neighboring states, Maryland and West Virginia–each a longtime haven for outdoorsmen–are taking very different approaches to youth hunting. If passed, this bill will have a devastating effect on recruiting young hunters and the future of wildlife conservation in Maryland, said Rob Sexton, USSA vice president for government affairs. The bill is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the future of hunting. Parents, not the government, are far more equipped to know when their sons and daughters are ready to hunt. House Bill 655 has been referred to the House Environmental Matters Committee in Maryland. The devastating effect Sexton mentions not only damages efforts to introduce youngsters to hunting, but it also will impact the states economy.
Asbestos removal UK

sentences for company chiefs who flout asbestos regulations. The call by unions followed last weeks court case in which two men were given community service after admitting using boys to clear potentially lethal asbestos from a factory.
Some people have been questioning the wisdom of attempting to remove all asbestos, particularly when it is in good condition and shows no signs of deterioration. There may be increased health risks from the removal process, including more airborne asbestos in the building for a number of years than before the removal. The relative risk of death from asbestos raises the issue of whether the money needed for removal could be better spent elsewhere.
Unless there is bipartisan support for John Cornyns sensible alternative bill–which establishes reasonable medical criteria for claimants–abusive asbestos litigation will continue, hurting genuine victims and business defendants alike.

Smith Restores Smile of 34-Year Old Domestic Abuse Survivor and Mother Although Ive been involved with GBAS for a number of years, Ive not had a case sent my way until recently, said Dr. Smith. When Gretchen saw her new smile in the mirror, she tearfully said, Now when I look in the mirror, Ill no longer remember the abuse. Thank you! I dont know who was happier — her or me! Dr. Smith went on to add, Through the GBAS program, AACD members like me assist survivors by treating their dental injuries sustained through domestic abuse. The program helps women reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem, and their lives. And, because more than five million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the United States and Canada, there is clearly a need for a program like Give Back A Smile to help survivors rejuvenate their lives through the caring hands of a local dentist. Im honored to be part of the Give Back a Smile program.
